Over the past six months, the Local Buying Program and Local Buying Foundation have made remarkable strides in supporting local and Indigenous businesses, fostering regional economic development and enhancing supplier capabilities across Australia. Through a series of strategic initiatives, events and partnerships, both programs have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for small businesses in BHP’s operational regions.
One of the most significant milestones achieved during this period has been the preparation for integration of the Local Buying Program into the Copper South Australia (CuSA) region. This move has opened new avenues for small and Indigenous businesses in South Australia to engage with BHP, providing them with streamlined procurement opportunities and access to work opportunities within Carapateena and Prominent Hill. The program’s introduction in CuSA has already garnered positive feedback from local suppliers, many of whom have highlighted the program’s simplicity and effectiveness in facilitating business growth.
The Local Buying Program and Local Buying Foundation have also been instrumental in fostering collaboration in the Pilbara region. The Newman Meet the Buyer event provided an invaluable platform for local businesses to connect with BHP representatives and discuss opportunities to better understand procurement requirements. Similarly, the Foundation’s sponsorship of the Hedland Economic Forum showcased its dedication to supporting regional economic discussions and highlighting the critical role small businesses play in driving local economies.
In the first half of FY25, the Local Buying Foundation has funded several initiatives aimed at upskilling local businesses. This includes leadership workshops, training sessions and webinars that cover topics such as BHP’s Minimum Requirements for suppliers, digital marketing strategies and operational compliance. These programs have empowered suppliers to meet industry standards, expand their capabilities and enhance their capacity.
A key focus for both the LBP and LBF has been supporting Indigenous businesses. Through targeted funding, mentorship programs and tailored procurement opportunities, each initiative has focissed on facilitating significant growth for Indigenous enterprises. This has not only strengthened business outcomes but also contributed to the broader goal of promoting cultural and economic inclusion.
As the Local Buying Program and Local Buying Foundation continue to evolve, their commitment to fostering regional economic resilience remains steadfast. Upcoming initiatives include further training opportunities, expansion into new regions, and increased collaboration with BHP and local stakeholders to unlock more opportunities for small businesses.
