NSW Mt Arthur Coal leads the way with conservation and rehabilitation works.

After two consecutive rain seasons in the Upper Hunter dumping well above average rainfall, weed growth is entering a high growth stage. The undergrowth requires the slashing of nominated areas with specialised equipment, as directed by BHP personnel, and is to be completed on a regular basis throughout the growing season.

For all virgin areas, it will require a double slash until it is at a stage where a regular single slash can complete the work to the desired standard. Due to the landscape and terrain, this work required a track-type slasher to ensure safety. The machinery needed is a Specialised “Posi track” Bobcat. BKA Earthworx has been engaged via the Local Buying Program to complete the work required.

A small local business has been engaged to assist in the maintenance of these important conservation areas of the mine site. This scope of work demonstrates BHP’s commitment to making sure the lands that they operate on are left in a useable and remediated condition, free from noxious weeds, feral animals and minimizing the build up of bush fire hazardous material.

BKA Earthworx recently registered with the LBP and has been identified as an efficient, safe and trusted operator for upkeep of conservation areas and other ground maintenance. They are capable of operating in remote areas and are very mobile. They have specific equipment for the work and experienced staff who operate safely and efficiently. The scope of works also included tree planting for conservation offset areas. The land will be left for future landholders to use productively in the future.

This local business has expanded as a result of the engagement and purchased more equipment to extend business capabilities. This has and will continue to provide economic and employment benefits to the local economy.
