Queensland Highlight Q1 FY23: More than just a bed for the night

BMA investment delivers benefits to local accommodation providers which flow throughout the wider business community.

Quite often, the fluctuating seasonal demand for accommodation services in regional areas makes it challenging for businesses to secure rooms for travelling staff, visitors and contractors, especially when the demand for accommodation is high and the number of providers is limited.  By consistently booking all year round, BMA is ensuring the longevity of the service as well as encouraging capacity building with establishments extending services and renovating to provide more rooms.

Accommodation suppliers engaged by BMA frequently rely on such bookings to reduce their overall vacancy rates and therefore improve their profitability.

BMA has engaged 13 accommodation providers across the Central Highlands, Isaac and Mackay regions, investing close to $1.5M during FY23.

67% of this local spend has been in the Central Highlands, and can largely be attributed to accommodation for apprentices completing their TAFE placement in Emerald. Accommodation for maintenance crews also contributes to the overall accommodation spend in the region.

The engagement is contributing to the vibrancy of local communities by ensuring a range of reliable, stable and reputable accommodation services are available to not only the mining industry but also other business sectors and tourists.

Accommodation providers employ or contract local people to provide housekeeping and other hospitality services within their facilities. Additional local businesses are utilised to provide maintenance services, and often these establishments provide catering and restaurant facilities – all of which provide essential support to small, local businesses.
