The BHP Local Buying Program was established to encourage relationships between BHP operations and small local, and Indigenous businesses. In addition, it assists to build capability and capacity across the local supply chain and boost regional economic development within BHP’s operational footprint.
The program will soon be released in the Nickel West Goldfields communities to assist small local businesses to engage competitively to supply goods and services to BHP’s Nickel West operations. These areas will include Wiluna, Leonora, Kalgoorlie and Kambalda.
The Local Buying Program is delivered in a strategic partnership between BHP and C-Res – a cost-neutral organisation. The program has been operating successfully in Queensland since 2012, in New South Wales since 2016, and in South Australia and Western Australia in the Pilbara since 2017.
The program has been highly successful nationally providing more than 56,000 BHP work opportunities, worth over $784M in actual spend, to more than 1,452 local suppliers channelled through the LBP by BHP.
The program will introduce an easier to use procurement to pay platform, ensure higher visibility of local suppliers’ capacity and capability, deliver continued sustainability to local employment, and secure economic benefits locally.
