Local Buying Program powers Mackay Marina Run

For BHP, delivering a high-profile community event like the Mackay Marina Run is more than a logistical exercise. It’s a chance to demonstrate how large-scale operations can support local economies and foster genuine community engagement. The challenge lies in balancing efficiency with impact. Sourcing a wide range of goods and services for an event of this scale demands speed, reliability and cost-effectiveness. At the same time, there’s a responsibility to uplift small businesses and simplify internal processes.

The Local Buying Program has helped BHP meet these challenges head-on. By streamlining procurement and reducing administrative overhead, the program enables local suppliers to contribute meaningfully to events that matter to their communities. Since 2017, BHP and BMA’s use of the program for the Marina Run has delivered over $108,000 in spend across 17 local suppliers, driving tangible local impact.

Goods and services sourced through the program have included marquee and equipment hire, catering such as fruit, meat and protein balls, signage and photography, and cultural artwork for event shirts. The Local Buying Program made it easier to access competitive quotes and trusted vendors, cutting down admin time and speeding up turnaround. Prompt supplier payments allowed teams to focus on delivery and quality, while the region saw economic uplift and cultural inclusion.

This approach reinforces BHP’s commitment to community wellbeing. It’s a model that shows how procurement can be more than a transaction, it can be a tool for connection, inclusion and lasting value.
