Communications improvements establish safety enhancements

Service Cart Operators play a critical role on site, navigating heavy vehicle roads to service machinery such as diggers and dozers. However, their work often requires parking on the roadside, creating challenges for other vehicles needing to pass safely. Without a direct means of communication, operators on the ground were unable to coordinate with approaching vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents and delays.

To address this issue, several safety enhancements have been introduced, significantly improving communication and awareness on site. Service Cart Operators are now equipped with portable two-way radios, ensuring they can maintain direct communication with other vehicles even when away from their carts. Additionally, large traffic cones have been placed around parked service carts to alert oncoming traffic. These cones include contact information, allowing approaching vehicles to establish communication with operators on the ground to seek permission to pass safely.

This solution not only enhances safety for personnel and equipment but also increases operational efficiency by reducing delays caused by unclear communication. The implementation of these measures has been supported by Create a Sign, a supplier registered with the Local Buying Program. The business provided bespoke traffic cones tailored to the site’s needs, showcasing the program’s ability to deliver customised safety solutions.

The Local Buying Program continues to serve as a vital platform for procuring safety consumables and signage that meet the unique requirements of BMA sites. In November alone, 34 work instructions for safety items were fulfilled by 15 local suppliers, demonstrating the program’s capacity to enhance safety while supporting regional businesses.

By partnering with local suppliers, BMA not only secures high-quality safety solutions but also contributes to the sustainability and growth of businesses within the community. This initiative highlights the value of local collaboration in driving innovation, improving safety, and ensuring reliable operations across the site.
