Sourcing quality materials on time can sometimes be a challenge for BHP due to long lead times and the inability to see exactly what is being ordered. BHP Buyers have materials procurement processes in place, including using SAP for direct orders and automatic reordering. This has been a challenge for the Local Buying Program to channel any of that off contract spend into small, local and Indigenous businesses, and the C-Res team is continuously working with BHP on new ways to integrate these processes.

BHP Operations Services (OS) is leading the way with goods procurement compared to services procurement, with almost 50% of their Work Instructions in FY24 being raised for material purchases.

With Operations Services skilling a production and maintenance workforce, and sourcing many items from local Mackay businesses like Four Real Industrial and Safety, the BHP OS Training Centre and Future Fit Academy are providing excellent procurement opportunities within the region.
