R.C. Upholstery, an Indigenous-owned business in Western Australia, has been engaged for its first work opportunity through the Local Buying Program. With assistance from the Port Hedland C-Res team, R.C. Upholstery was able to navigate the registration process and submit its response to the buyer. This engagement not only provided an efficient connection between buyer and supplier, but it also empowered an Indigenous business and helped to build its capability and capacity.
The buyer was already familiar with R.C. Upholstery’s reputation for producing quality and reasonably-priced goods for local customers.
The first work opportunity has also raised awareness of the business among potential buyers and will involve the production of Indigenous print seat covers for specific ship loader operator chairs. These seat covers will not only increase the chairs’ lifespan, but also make them easier to clean whilst providing a layer of hygienic protection.
“ Enabling Rex to perform works with BHP without the hurdles small businesses generally have to overcome without the Local Buying Program. As work increases, Rex will be able to employ staff and grow his business, as currently he is the only person.” Elijah Sorensen – Production Specialist, Port Production, WAIO.
