Throw a ‘Local’ Shrimp on the barbie!

In Australia, we call them prawns not shrimps! Debbie’s Seafood and Fish Cafe has been sharing the joy of fresh prawns and seafood with residents across the Mackay and Isaac regions for over 25 years.

Starting out from their home in Mackay, Debbie’s Seafood has grown to include a fresh seafood shopfront, a cafe and two seafood trucks that service Mackay and the Isaac regions. Recently the business was awarded the National Seafood Industry Awards – 2022 winners of the Large Seafood Business category.

Mine sites are a 24/7, 365 day per year operation.  Debbie’s Seafood supplies Christmas Day prawns on some sites to make the day more enjoyable and festive for those working away, missing the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.

Not only does Debbie’s Seafood supply their goods to the local community, they also support other local businesses. A good example of this is through Debbie’s daily purchase of ice from another business registered on the program, Blue River Ice.  A strong local supply chain reduces BHP’s exposure during times of uncertainty and when out of region supply is unavailable.

Debbie’s Seafood credits the LBP Voucher Program and Big Thanks for not only increasing the local spend in their business, but also the local promotion that this provides for their business. BMA staff also redeem their reward vouchers at Debbie’s Seafood local store in Mackay or through the seafood truck that visits Moranbah once a week. Craig from Debbie’s Seafood said that when he receives a voucher from BMA staff members he likes to say thanks, because he understands that the voucher system is utilised to reward staff for their efforts.

“I like to say congratulations to the BMA employees for doing a good job or for achieving their safety targets because I understand that they have been given a voucher as a thank-you and we appreciate their efforts and are grateful that they choose to use the voucher at our shop.”
