The UniHub, ‘Growing Our Own Workforce’ program in Roxby Downs is making considerable impacts in the community, driven by local coordinator Angela Thompson.
11 locals have signed up to begin study with Uni Hub Spencer Gulf as part of the program in Roxby Downs. Several other locals who had already begun their study are also linking in for support with Angela. Students are studying in diverse areas from engineering and business studies to education and social work.
A Roxby Downs area school student who is studying Nursing subjects with Uni Hub as part of CQUniversity’s Start Uni Now (SUN) program has won a cadetship in nursing at the local hospital. Even though she had not yet completed year 12, her academic capability was recognised because of her successful university studies.
Many people in the Roxby Downs community are studying at university online, however, previous to the Growing Our Own Workforce program, were doing so unsupported. A community survey helped quantify the local demand for tertiary study support in Roxby. Proudly funded by the LBF SA, UniHub was able to expand this successful program into Roxby Downs. The program, also available in Port Pirie and Port Augusta, provides support to people in remote areas in their tertiary education studies.
Angela says: “I am excited about supporting locals to study. Online learning can be isolating, so it is invaluable to have help to navigate the process and to discuss challenges. I am happy to be part of increasing the skills of local people to enrich the workforce in our community”.
