A recent project at Mt Arthur has showcased the power of local capability and Indigenous business engagement through the BHP Local Buying Program.
When a full-site rollout of a Collision Awareness System (CAS) required custom fabrication for safe installation across Excavator and Dozer fleets, an unexpected circumstances threatened project continuity. The team quickly pivoted, engaging KOABD Transport & Maintenance, a Muswellbrook-based supplier, through the Local Buying Program to fabricate and install custom brackets for CAS screens and masts.
KOABD’s prior onsite experience and technical expertise ensured a seamless transition, maintaining timelines and delivering high-quality, safety-focused outcomes. The engagement also supported Indigenous business growth, with KOABD expanding its team and capabilities in supply, transport, and maintenance.
This success story highlights how local procurement can unlock real value—keeping projects on track, enhancing safety, and strengthening local business economic participation.
