Blackseed Catering’s journey with BHP

For one of Australia’s largest companies, BHP, marking important cultural and mental health initiatives like RU OK Day is a significant event. The challenge faced by BHP Mt Arthur was finding a suitable caterer to provide 50 morning tea grazing boxes for their teams. This catering wasn’t just about feeding employees, it was about creating a meaningful and memorable experience that aligned with the theme of the day – promoting mental health awareness, connection and support. The opportunity lay in doing something unique, culturally relevant, and impactful for the teams on-site.

To meet this need, the site turned to the Local Buying Program to engage Blackseed Catering, a small but growing Indigenous supplier, to deliver a range of bush tucker-inspired morning tea boxes. This wasn’t a standard catering request—it was about using native ingredients to provide a cultural experience that would connect the team to the land and its traditional owners.

Blackseed Catering curated a menu featuring seasonal Bush Tucker ingredients that included bush lamingtons, scones with rainforest rosella, Illawarra plum, and desert peach jams, wattle seed brownies with wattle seed cream, and rainforest sweet chilli philli. Each ingredient was chosen for its connection to Indigenous culture, reflecting the richness of Australia’s native foods. These grazing boxes were designed to deliver more than just food—they provided an opportunity for attendees to experience a taste of Indigenous Australia, fostering both connection and reflection.

“Blackseed aims to dish up more than just food. Blackseed aims to showcase an experience that can feed all the senses and nourish our spirits to grow. We are so happy to grow through the LBP with BHP.”
