Safety is paramount at BHP’s Peak Downs and Saraji operations. When reviews identified opportunities to strengthen site safety and efficiency, the BHP Local Buying Program (LBP) connected BHP teams with Mackay-based supplier Just Mining Pty Ltd.
Through LBP, Just Mining delivered tailored solutions including custom-built handrails, gates, and access platforms to reduce interaction risks between people and machinery. These improvements enhanced workflows and supported safe work practices across multiple sites.
The collaboration improved safety for workers and pedestrians in high-risk areas by reducing interaction risks and creating safer access points. It streamlined equipment access and maintenance processes, making day-to-day operations more efficient. By engaging a regional supplier, BHP strengthened local capability and supported economic growth in the Mackay region. This partnership also advanced BHP’s social value goals by investing in local business and fostering community resilience.
This partnership shows how the BHP Local Buying Program creates opportunities for small, local and Indigenous suppliers to contribute to safer, more efficient operations while building economic and social value in Queensland communities.
