GMUSG Trade Expo & Conference 2018

The Local Buying Program team was proud to attend the GMUSG conference this year and share a stall with BHP. The 14th GMUSG Conference and Trade Expo surpassed previous records with 515 attendees and 70 exhibitors gathering in Port Augusta from 28 to 30 August.

South Australia’s major producers including BHP, GFG Alliance, OZ Minerals and Nyrstar presented along with emerging project developers and several renewable energy proponents. Maximising local supplier participation emerged as the central theme amongst presenters and this was reinforced in the presentation given by David Page, BHP OD Head of Projects, who talked about the projects at Olympic Dam and the Local Buying Program. The LBP team was excited to see some of our LBP supplier stalls at the conference.

Rebecca Knol of SACOME led a solutions focused energy session headlined by the Minister for Energy and Mining, Hon Dan van Holst Pellekaan. Other panels dealing with innovation, defence industries and infrastructure rounded out the 2-day program.

Eyre Trading

Congratulations to both Dannys at Eyre Trading, a Local Buying Program supplier, who won Best Exhibitor Award this year (pictured) at the GMUSG conference.

Eyre Trading auctioned their Best Exhibitor prize (a 5 piece hand-tool set) which was bolstered by another 2 piece power tool set donated by Port Augusta’s Better Homes Supplies Mitre-10. All proceeds from the auction, matched by GMUSG, resulted in a $3,440 contribution to Beyond Blue. An excellent outcome given the importance of mental health support for our industry and people working in rural and remote communities.

Marie Kennedy of Eyre Trading stated “we were proud to attend our first GMUSG Conference and were lucky enough to win Best Exhibitor. During the Conference the issue of mental health and high suicide rates in regional work forces was raised, leading to the decision to auction off the prize and donate the proceeds to Beyond Blue.  Eyre Trading is proud to be associated with GMUSG and excited to work with larger companies that are committed to local content. We believe the Local Buying Program is a fantastic initiative and we have benefited from BHP purchasing through this Program. It is a great example of how commitment to local content can be beneficial to everyone involved”.
