2018 – A Year Of Milestones And Achievements
In many aspects, the Local Buying Program (LBP) has achieved some amazing accomplishments in 2018, beyond exceeding forecasted KPI’s and financial milestones. 2018 has been a monumental year for the LBP, with the joint efforts of C-Res and BHP culminating in some resounding successes and significant contributions to small businesses and local communities. Statistical milestones reached during the year include $250 Million approved spend, over 22,500 work opportunities created, 13 day average payment terms from receipt of invoice and over 1,200 approved suppliers.
The LBP rounded out the year in South Australia with success at the Premier’s Awards in Mining and Energy. C-Res and BHP were announced joint winners of the METS Excellence in Working with Communities award. C-Res is extremely proud to have received such recognition for all of the hard work executed in partnership with BHP, which has resulted in the successful delivery of the Local Buying Program in South Australia. We are equally proud of the substantial outcomes delivered to local businesses in Roxby Downs and the Upper Spencer Gulf, and the successes achieved in just 12 short months.
On the other side of the country, the Western Australian C-Res team welcomed Tracey Cuttriss-Smith, C-Res CEO, and Directors as they embarked on a three day visit from Central Queensland to join in the celebrations for the first anniversary of the LBP in WA. A very busy itinerary showcased Port Hedland and a tour of the Harbour. Numerous stakeholder consultations and strategy meetings with BHP proved extremely successful and beneficial for forward planning and the ongoing success and ultimate growth of the Program.
The 1st Anniversary Celebration was held at The Web and was a very enjoyable evening. The night showcased the success stories of the Local Buying Program in the Pilbara and provided an opportunity for BHP employees and General Managers to connect with local businesses. We look forward to growing further opportunities for small businesses in 2019 and seeing what the Program will accomplish in our local Western Australian communities.
In Queensland the Program continues to deliver increased opportunities for small local businesses to provide goods and services to BHP Minerals Australia Assets, with the highest number of registered small businesses participating in the Program since inception. Steady growth of the Program in New South Wales is also assisting small local businesses to engage with BHP’s Mt Arthur Coal operations and BHP personnel now have support available from C-Res staff on site each Wednesday to assist with any Program requirements.
Promoting local economies and maximising the opportunities available to our suppliers, while assisting BHP to engage with local businesses, will remain our focus in 2019. We are excited to see what the Program will achieve in the coming 12 months and look forward to working alongside our suppliers and buyers to ensure the ongoing success of the Program and strengthening our local communities.

- 1,227 – Businesses approved to supply via the LBP

On The Horizon
Website update – In the early stages of 2019 we will be releasing some upgrades and improvements to the Local Buying Program website, which will enhance the user experience. We are very excited share some information in the January eNews edition and further information will be released as the project progresses.
Looking ahead to the first anniversary for the LBP in South Australia, we are planning an event to celebrate and acknowledge the Program’s accomplishments during the last 12 months and to continue building critical relationships with LBP suppliers, stakeholders and BHP representatives. We will release details soon, and look forward to joining our South Australian suppliers and BHP buyers on this special occasion.
